Herbs for the Heart

by: Team Healthizen

A healthy heart translates into a healthy mind and body. Nature has blessed mankind with a variety of herbs that serve multiple purposes, one of them being strengthening your heart.

The holy basil, an indigenous herb also known as Tulsi, has as its primary constituents mainly oleanolic acid, rosmarinic acid, carvacrol, and beta caryophyllenen, which help to overcome malaise associated with cardiac disease, reduce cholesterol, and also strengthen the heart and blood vessels. A decoction of a few leaves in water can be consumed 2-3 times in a day. The leaves may also be crushed and added to salads.

People suffering from hypertension are at high risk of getting a heart attack. Anethole in fennel is effective in controlling blood pressure, thereby reducing the stress on the heart. Fennel water can be consumed 1-2 times a day or can be added to salad and vegetable preparations. Fennel seeds can also be chewed after meals.

Arjuna, another Indian herb, is found to be cardio-protective and has antioxidant properties almost equal to vitamin E. It is known to prevent cholesterol deposition in arteries and has also been proven to treat heart failure and coronary heart disease. A small teaspoon of powdered Arjuna bark can be taken with milk or water daily.

Alfalfa is a good source of fiber, proteins, vitamins A, C, E, and K, and also minerals like calcium and magnesium. The active component, Saponin in Alfalfa, not only prevents cholesterol absorption but also prevents its deposition in the blood vessels. Additionally, being a rich source of phytoestrogen, it helps to prevent congestive heart failure. Fresh Alfalfa juice with carrot juice is the best for cardiovascular problems. It may also be used in salads and soups.

An infusion prepared from the leaves of the Peepal tree is a rich source of phytonutrients and can help to reduce palpitation and cardiac weakness. Soak these leaves in water overnight, strain out the liquid in the morning and store it in a white bottle. Drink 15 ml of it twice daily.

Rosemary's essential oils have been shown to stimulate the heart and control palpitations. A few drops of the Rosemary extract can be consumed directly every day or its dried and powdered leaves can be used in soups, stews, sauces, and for garnishing.

The richest source of Vitamin C, the Indian gooseberry or Amla protects the heart and helps to reduce congestion. This antioxidant-rich fruit also aids in decreasing triglycerides and LDL (low density lipoproteins). Consume 25-50 ml of Amla juice daily in the morning on an empty stomach to prevent heart disease. Always remember to try only one herb at a time. Begin with small doses; and once you are comfortable, the dose may be increased.
