Bloating and flatulence

by: Anonymous

Question : I HAVE been suffering from bloating, flatulence and abdominal pain for the past three years. My condition has worsened and my life is no longer comfortable. I also often experience regurgitation of sour liquid.

Answer : YOU may be suffering from gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a digestive problem in which stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into the oesophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This constant backwash of acid can irritate the lining of the oesophagus, causing it to be inflamed and painful.

The other symptoms of GERD include:

• Burning sensation in the chest

• Difficulties in swallowing

• Coughing or wheezing

• Hoarseness or sore throat

• Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

• Nausea and vomiting

GERD can be due to smoking, eating large meals especially near bedtime, being overweight and enzyme deficiencies.

Probiotics helps rebalance the friendly bacteria in the gut and reduce potentially harmful microbial enzymes in the intestine.

Increase your vitamin B complex intake for proper digestion. Biotin, choline, and inositol together with lecithin pave the way for proper body fat metabolism.

Following a disciplined diet is an important aspect of managing GERD. Eat more vegetables and have smaller but frequent meals. Chew your food thoroughly and do not eat three hours before bedtime.

Avoid carbonated beverages, fats, fried foods, processed foods, peppermint, tomatoes, onions, caffeine products and spicy or highly seasoned foods.

Do not wear clothes that fit tightly around waist. Maintain an exercise programme that includes walking, biking or low impact aerobics. Avoid running and weight lifting.
