Boost immunity to counter tonsillitis
Question : I HAVE the tendency of getting tonsillitis very often and my doctor has advised me to remove my tonsils. Each time when my tonsils are sore, my doctor would prescribe antibiotics. I don't believe this will help in the long term as I keep getting the problem.
Answer : TONSILLITIS is an inflammation of the palatine tonsils. It can be caused by either viral or bacterial infection. Generally, children tend to get viral tonsillitis, while adults tend to get bacterial tonsillitis. An improper diet that is high in refined carbohydrates and low protein and other nutrients may also predispose one to develop tonsillitis.
Probiotics supplementation is necessary to replace the 'friendly bacteria' especially if antibiotics are prescribed. Friendly bacteria such as lactobacillus NCFM, lactobacillus LA5, bifidobacterium BB12 help to modulate immune functions.
Allicin supplementation may be helpful as it has remarkable antibiotic properties. It also assists the immune system in a number of important ways, including stimulating cells, killing pathogens and detoxifying carcinogens. Allicin is able to penetrate microorganisms cell walls, upset their biochemical balance and impede their activity. Even though allicin may exert anti- microbial effects on bad bacteria, it will not destroy the friendly bacteria flora in the intestinal tract.
A high intake of vitamin C with bioflavonoids may be helpful as they help fight infection and boost the immune response. A cleansing juice fast for three days with vegetable broth can help prevent tonsillitis.
For relief of tonsillitis pain, use a warm salt-water gargle. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water and gargle three times a day to help reduce swelling. Flaxseed oil can also be used to reduce pain and inflammation, and aids in recovery. Have a good rest and drink plenty of fluids.
