Lasik Surgery

by: Kevin Stith

Today, one of the biggest advancements in ophthalmology is laser surgery. In spite of this, only about 20% of ophthalmologists in the United States are trained to perform this operation.

The popularity of Lasik surgery is attributed to the fact that it is a fast and painless operation, with a faster recovery time. However, this operation is not suitable for everyone suffering from myopia. Sometimes, PRK is preferred over Lasik, if only a small correction of myopia has to be done. Basically, PRK and Lasik are two different types of laser eye surgeries.

There are several other modifications that fall under these two categories. LASEK is a new kind of PRK, which is also more complex. It has an advantage over PRK since the healing process is faster and at the same time the use of cutting blades is avoided. Conventional IntraLasik is a type of Lasik surgery that involves a femtosecond Intralase laser to create the corneal flap, instead of a metal blade. Hence, a much thinner flap is made, eliminating the imperfections otherwise caused due to a metal blade. Custom Vue Lasik is a step further than the traditional Lasik surgery; the excimer laser is directed by an advanced technology called Wavefront. One surgery that blends the best of all worlds, and hence is the most expensive, is called Custom Vue IntraLasik. In this, a laser is used to make a cornea flap, and use of Custom Vues Waterfront technology is made in order to direct the excimer laser.

According to a survey conducted with 254 patients who had gone through Lasik, LASEK or PRK surgery, 93% found the results satisfactory.

Lasik provides detailed information on Lasik, Lasik Eye Surgery, Lasik Surgery, Lasik Complications and more. Lasik is affliated with Lasik Eye Surgery Information.
