Sleeping Pills

by: Damian Sofsian

There are two types of sleeping pills. You can find many brands of sleeping pills sold over the counter, and there are those that can only be prescribed by a doctor. Many people have difficulty getting adequate sleep due to tension, depression and pain, while others suffer from insomnia. Sleeping pills may be very effective for some but could be dangerous for others. That is why it is important to know how a sleeping pill works and what the possible side effects of are.

Both prescribed and non-prescribed sleeping pills work as anti-anxiety agents or as sedatives or hypnotics to relax your muscles and to depress your bodys nervous system in order to create an artificial sleep. The pills usually contain antihistamines that make you feel drowsy and make your nose, eyes and mouth become dry.

While sleeping pills may promise to cure insomnia, they do not actually facilitate the essential healing and restorative cycles and functions normally undertaken by the body during sleep. That is why taking sleeping pills can often leave you feeling drowsy and restless in the morning.

The dangers of using sleeping pill are numerous. When you become dependent on this drug you usually need to take more and more in order to fall asleep. The more you take, the more addictive it becomes. Before you know it, you are taking it more often than what is just prescribed. If you are taking sleeping pills because of pain, you should go to your physician to see what is causing the pain before resorting to pills.

Taking sleeping pills can indeed induce you to sleep, but the side effects are risky. If you experience difficulty sleeping, you should consult a physician before you take any sleeping aid.
